Preliminary arrests and evacuation
A 48-year-old resident and a 46-year-old visitor to the apartment were temporarily arrested in the incident. The latter is already known to the police because of previous offenses related to the production of illegal firecrackers. The explosion was so violent that the pressure wave ripped a window out of the facade and threw it onto the street. The entire residential building had to be evacuated and the residents have not currently returned to their apartments. The social welfare office of the city of Bochum has temporarily accommodated three of the affected residents.
It remains unclear whether the 70-year-old woman's medical emergency is actually related to the explosion. The police have started an investigation to clarify this issue. The statics of the building are currently being checked by the Federal Agency for Technical Relief, as the house is no longer habitable after the incident.
