Moped driver (68) slightly injured in Bochum – police are looking for witnesses!

A traffic accident in Bochum-Weitmar injured a 68-year-old moped driver from Essen on Sunday, July 6th. At around 12:50 p.m., the woman was driving on Essener Straße in the direction of Bochum-Wattenscheid when a car suddenly braked in front of her. This caused the moped driver to slam on the brakes, which resulted in her losing control of her vehicle and causing her to fall. Fortunately, she only sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for outpatient treatment. The driver of the car continued his journey and is now wanted by the police. There is currently no information about the vehicle or the driver; the police are calling on witnesses to call 0234 909-5206. Further information can be obtained from Gianna Isabella Kruck on 0234 909-1022 or by email at pressestelle.bochum@polizei.nrw.de. Radio Ennepe Ruhr reports on this incident.

Traffic accidents like this cast a lasting shadow on the streets of our cities. Another incident in Bochum shows that the situation does not only affect older drivers. On Monday, May 26th, a 17-year-old moped driver in Wattenscheid was seriously injured when he drove into oncoming traffic while overtaking a car. These accidents make it clear that young drivers in particular can often find themselves in dangerous situations. In this case, the moped driver ended up in the hospital after a collision with an oncoming car, while the driver was uninjured. As can be seen from the report by LokalKompakt, the traffic commissioner has taken over the investigation.

Improve traffic safety

The increasing number of road accidents raises the question of how we can improve safety on our roads. According to the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMV), a total of 2,839 people died in road traffic in Germany in 2023. However, it is noted that the number of road deaths has been reduced by more than 80 percent since 1970. The federal government has set itself the ambitious goal of reducing the number of traffic deaths by 40 percent by 2030 in order to get closer to Vision Zero - that is, zero deaths in road traffic. BMV has launched a comprehensive road safety pact that includes various measures to improve road safety.

The focus is particularly on innovative technologies and improving road infrastructure. Plans include, among other things, the introduction of turning assistance systems in new vehicles and the provision of record resources for bicycle and pedestrian traffic. A clear roadmap is updated and reviewed at regular intervals to ensure that measures are always up to date with the latest technology.

These accidents and the associated challenges require joint action by all road users. By paying more attention to road traffic and implementing appropriate safety measures, we could work together to ensure greater safety. Stay alert and drive safely!
