Fast-paced chase in Bonn: Police save lives from attempted murder!

A spectacular chase caused a stir in Bonn when police officers wanted to check a vehicle on Sunday evening. At around 7:25 p.m. on Poppelsdorfer Allee, the driver accelerated and raced directly towards one of the officers. The 29-year-old police officer was only able to get to safety by jumping to the side while the fleeing driver drove across several streets in Bonn's city center and north of the city. There was an accident on Thomasstrasse in which a patrol car was damaged. The driver and his passenger abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, but were caught by the police a short time later and arrested. WDR reports that the police officer is now being investigated on suspicion of attempted murder.

These incidents do not come as a surprise when you take a look at the current crime situation in Germany. According to the Police Crime Statistics (PKS) from the Federal Criminal Police Office, there was a decrease in the total number of crimes of 1.7% in 2024 compared to the previous year, which also means a decrease to around 5.84 million crimes. One reason for this decline is the falling numbers of cannabis crimes following partial legalization in April 2024. However, the increase in other crimes that affect people's sense of security remains worrying. The most common crimes last year were thefts and property crimes, while crimes against life, such as murder and manslaughter, accounted for a very small percentage. Statista has analyzed the developments of the last few years in detail.

Investigations and calling for witnesses

In another case that illustrates how tense the security situation is, the homicide squad in Bonn recently had to take action. On February 18, 2025, a 32-year-old Lithuanian was provisionally arrested in a bank anteroom in Bonn-Beuel on suspicion of arson. He is said to have started the fire in a sleeping bag belonging to a sleeping homeless person, which caused significant property damage. However, the injured party was no longer on site when the emergency services arrived. The Bonn public prosecutor's office has taken over the investigation and is looking for witnesses or the unknown victim. Information can be given via the police. The Bonn police calls on the population to help.

Crime trends show that despite a general decline in certain areas, people's sense of security remains severely affected by other crimes. A look at the numbers makes it clear that North Rhine-Westphalia, where Bonn is located, has the highest crime figures in Germany. The crime statistics and recent events are catching up with citizens and raising the question: How safe do people in downtown Bonn actually feel?
