Winter flight schedule 2025: Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn take off!
The flight season has begun, and the two major airports in North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn, are starting the 2025/26 winter flight program with an expanded offering. Düsseldorf Airport, which serves around 130 destinations in 46 countries with over 50 airlines, offers a versatility for the coming months that will be slightly exceeded last year. The number of destinations served is increasing from over 120 to currently 130, and operators expect passenger growth of around 4-5% in 2025, equivalent to around 20 million travelers. However, a record from 2019, when more than 25 million passengers were counted, remains unmatched. The busiest day of 2025 is expected to be October 12, with more than 86,000 passengers streaming through the terminals.
But Cologne/Bonn Airport also inspires with a breath of fresh air. With 22 airlines serving 71 destinations in 30 countries, the airport has seen an increase from one year to the next - last year there were 21 airlines to 69 destinations. The airport expects around 10.6 million passengers in 2025, after exceeding the 10 million mark in 2024 for the first time since 2019. October 12th is also the busiest travel day here, with over 45,000 travelers.
Cologne/Bonn Airport on the rise
The Cologne/Bonn Airport, with the IATA code CGN, is one of the largest commercial airports in Germany. It currently ranks sixth in passenger traffic and third in cargo flights. In 2024, over 10 million passengers used the airport, highlighting the post-pandemic development. The airport is the seventh largest in Germany and has developed significantly in recent years. It offers modern facilities and is one of the few airports in Germany that is open 24 hours.
Located near Cologne, around 12 km from the city center, the airport is an important HUB for airlines such as Eurowings, as well as for freight companies such as FedEx and UPS. It also serves as the location of a training center for the German and European astronaut programs - a highlight that not many airports can boast.
The big players in German air traffic
As the Statistics show, the number of passengers in the major German airports is constantly increasing. Overall, it can be observed that the numbers have increased by 8.29 percent compared to 2023. Frankfurt Airport leads the ranking with over 61 million passengers, followed by Munich and Berlin. Düsseldorf, with over 20 million passengers, is in fourth place and Cologne/Bonn is in sixth place in the big league of German airports with almost 10 million.
Overall, it shows that air travel is still very popular despite the challenges of recent years. The extended autumn travel season and a stabilized waiting time at security checks make flying more attractive again. It remains exciting to see how the numbers at the two airports will develop in the coming years, but the signs are good.
