Wonderful stories: 55 years of Bonn basketball in the new book!”
At a time full of exciting achievements, the Telekom Baskets Bonn are celebrating a very special anniversary. The book “We Have Made Miracles” honors the impressive history of Bonn basketball in an extravagant format. On over 400 pages, spread across 147 pages of short stories, 182 large-format photos and 39 pages of statistics, the work focuses on milestones from the last 55 years. The first head coach Bruno Socé, who shaped the team in the “From Virus to Vice” season (1998/99), is particularly honored.
The book is not just a chronicle that represents dry data. Rather, it was written in narrative mode, with various authors offering a subjective perspective on the club's history and sharing previously unpublished information. Wolfgang Wiedlich, the president of the Baskets and one of the main authors, explains that a complete encyclopedia was not possible and a mere chronicle was found to be too boring.
A look at Bruno Socé
Bruno Socé, born in 1946, was a defining figure in German basketball and died on May 22, 2014 in Munich. Active as a player for the Belgrade and Sarajevo teams, his coaching career began in 1980 at the basketball school in Sarajevo and worked there until 1991. In 1995 he was signed by Telekom Baskets Bonn, where he won the championship title in the 2nd Bundesliga in his first season and led the team to the Bundesliga. His second place in the following season was impressive, and he also managed to reach the runner-up position in 1998/99 and 2000/01, albeit against Alba Berlin in the final.
His greatest success at European level was reaching the quarter-finals of the Saporta Cup in the 2000/01 season. Despite his successes, the time after Bonn was turbulent; He returned to the Bundesliga for a short time, but faced numerous challenges. His last coaching position was at Gaz Metan Mediaș in Romania until 2011. One of Socé's mottos remains in the memory: “Basketball is not fun, it's hard work,” a motto that shaped his training and the philosophy of his teams.
Insights into Baskets history
The authors of the book play an important role in shedding light on the different facets of the club's history. Hall architect Jan van Dorp humorously describes the challenges of the hall project, while ex-sports manager Andreas Boettcher gives insights into the everyday life of team orthopedist Michael Volkmer. Sebastian Andre tells his story as a fan drummer who eventually became a team manager.
Wolfgang Wiedlich, who has been active in various functions, from youth coach to department head to president of Baskets e.V. since 1998, has played a key role in the development and success of the club. His journey took him through various positions in basketball, and until January 1, 2025 he will share the management of BonBas GmbH with Simon Pallmann.
Overall, the new book paints a vivid picture of Bonn basketball and honors not only the historical achievements, but also the many people who have contributed to making basketball a real hit in Bonn. Whether old fans or newbies, this work offers something for everyone and is a must for Telekom Baskets Bonn fans.
