It was a beautiful Sunday morning on October 3rd, 2025, when the Bottrop Blackjacks played their first U15 home game on the sports field at Vonderorter Wienberg. The syndicate with the Dortmund Wanderers not only attracts young talent, but also a whole range of families. Around 70 spectators found their way to the pitch to support their offspring and the team.
The Bottrop Blackjacks, whose youth department was only launched in 2022, have already made a name for themselves in the local baseball scene. Your U15 youth have been playing in the state league for a year and a half and have now been able to compete in front of their home crowd for the first time. The home games previously took place in Marl and Dortmund, which made the anticipation for the home game even greater.
Successful training and community spirit
Particularly noteworthy was the commitment of the parents, who sold food and drink on site and thus contributed significantly to the sense of community. The club's chairman, Sebastian Stern, was pleased with the number of home games and the positive development of the club, which now has 66 members - over half of whom are young people. The training for the younger U10 age groups, which started in July 2024, complements the growing offering for the little ones.
Youth baseball is played in mixed teams, with the young athletes using aluminum bats, as wooden bats are banned in the professional field. Blackjacks therefore offer an attractive platform for young people who want to start playing baseball.
The game and outlook on the season
The game itself had a bitter ending for the Bottrop Blackjacks. They lost 1:23 against Untouchables Paderborn. With a total of three wins and seven losses, the team is currently in fourth place among six teams in the league. But despite the defeat, the optimism among players and parents remains unbroken. It turns out that the sense of community and team spirit are in the foreground, and this is what makes baseball in Bottrop so special.
