Proud landscape gardeners: Recklinghausen celebrates new professionals!

On July 9, 2025 the time had come - 48 graduates of the Herwig-Blankertz vocational college in Recklinghausen were able to receive their diplomas. Among the graduates who can now look forward to their future careers with pride, 35 candidates successfully completed the field of gardening and landscaping, while 13 graduates chose the field of production horticulture. This celebratory acquittal ceremony took place on the campus of the vocational college and attracted numerous representatives of the Garden, Landscape and Sports Field Construction Association of North Rhine-Westphalia. V. (VGL NRW), who paid tribute to the new specialists. The event is the highlight of a series of acquittal ceremonies that took place in various cities in North Rhine-Westphalia in June. A total of 161 new landscape gardeners were accepted into the profession. [Gabot] reports that as part of these celebrations, graduates were also ceremoniously introduced to their professions at the horticultural education center in Essen and at the Sion brewery in Cologne.

Particularly noteworthy is Marvin Hohmann from Gladbeck, who was recognized as the best in gardening and landscaping. Further honors went to well-known graduates such as Pascal Lukassen from Bromkamp Garten- und Landschaftsarchitektur GmbH in Bottrop and Leon Uphues from Tüns Garten- und Landschaftsarchitektur from Lüdinghausen as well as Klara Küsken from Eckhard Vornbrock Garten- und Landschaftsbau GmbH from Dorsten.

Successful celebrations in Cologne and Essen

The graduates were duly celebrated not only in Recklinghausen, but also in Essen and Cologne. In Essen, 72 of 82 graduates were successful in gardening and landscaping. The best performances were achieved by Linus Möllers from Grün and Gruga, Luca Trautvetter also from the Grün and Gruga company, and Malte Michel Roggenstein from the Tenhaven gardening and landscaping company. In Cologne, 43 new landscape gardeners were honored at the Sion brewery, including the best, Linus Weber from Ralph Krämer GmbH, followed by Tobias Martens and Lisa Herold from the city of Cologne as second and third place. [Neue Landschaft] highlights how important such celebrations are for cohesion in the industry.

A look at the future of horticulture

The importance of horticulture is growing these days, and this was also clear during the ceremonial speeches in Recklinghausen. Christian Schenke from Scheidtmann GmbH and other speakers emphasized the responsibility and opportunities that these professions bring with them. Peter Horst, Vice President of the North Rhine-Westphalia Horticultural Association, also discussed the good future prospects for the graduates and the ongoing shortage of skilled workers in the industry. These factors, coupled with an increasing focus on sustainability and the effects of climate change, make training in this area particularly relevant. According to the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Agriculture, almost 80% of apprenticeships are in gardening and landscaping. [Chamber of Agriculture] informs that around 1,550 candidates take their exams in horticulture every year, and the number of trainees remains constant or increasing despite demographic challenges.

With all these new skilled workers from the acquittal celebrations, the industry has received a breath of fresh air. The graduates are now ideally equipped to work successfully in the world of horticulture with a good hand.
