Migration in Coesfeld: Opportunities and challenges in focus!

There is currently an intensive debate in Coesfeld about the challenges associated with migration. Lars Vogel, chairman of the CDU city association, makes it clear how important it is to address these problems openly. This involves central issues such as the education and care of refugee children, integration into the labor market, housing and crime statistics. “Migration is a task for society as a whole,” says Vogel. He recognizes that local associations and institutions achieve a lot, but at the same time advocates controlled immigration as an opportunity and warns against trivializing current integration problems. This is viewed differently by some political actors.

The critics of the cityscape debate are primarily representatives of the Greens. Sarah Albertz argues that blanket stigmatization of foreign-looking people is dangerous and divisive. She emphasizes the importance of diversity and intact social coexistence in Coesfeld. In her speech it is clear that she wants to point out the positive aspects of migration without ignoring the existing challenges.

Demands for a common solution

Sami Bouhari, the chairman of the SPD Coesfeld, goes one step further. He distances himself from certain statements made by the Chancellor and emphasizes the strength of diversity. In his opinion, efforts should be focused on tackling “real problems” such as language barriers and integration into the labor market. These practical questions are critical to successful integration.

Josef Schulze Spüntrup from Pro Coesfeld shares the view that the cityscape can be beautiful as long as all the people who call Coesfeld their home feel like they belong. The living situation plays a central role in this discussion. Niels Geuking from the Family Party describes Coesfeld as a safe city and demands that politicians should pay more attention to affordable housing and childcare.

Political differences and the role of the FDP

Kirsten Fabry from the FDP, on the other hand, recognizes changes in the cityscape and draws attention to problematic behavior. She admits that some men with a migrant background attract attention in public - this behavior cannot be ignored. Despite these concerns, she calls for an intelligent migration policy and makes it clear that she does not have racist intentions. The different approaches and views show that there is a wide range of opinions on these challenges within the city council.

At first glance, the differences of opinion between the political parties seem insurmountable, but the common goal of making Coesfeld a lively and inclusive city is emphasized by everyone involved. The current discussions could be the key to sustainably improving integration and coexistence in the city.
