Four Düren drivers suspected of drugs – police take stock!

What's happening in Düren? On June 17, 2025, the police carried out a traffic stop in the Düren urban area as part of the Europe-wide initiative “ROADPOL – Operation Alcohol & Drugs”. This campaign aims to increase road safety by combating driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. During the inspection, more than 100 road users were checked and officers found several violations.

What is worrying is that four drivers were suspected of being under the influence of drugs and therefore had to provide blood samples. In these cases, administrative offense proceedings were initiated immediately. But it's not just drugs that pose a risk: nine drivers were also caught using cell phones while driving, and 18 people were not wearing seatbelts properly. In addition, further violations regarding load securing and overdue general inspections were documented. The police's appeal here is clear: consumption of alcohol and drugs not only impairs one's own perception and ability to react, but also endangers other road users. Avoiding such substances is essential for road safety.

EU-wide campaign and prevention

These controls are part of a Europe-wide strategy that is carried out ten times a year, supplemented by special operations such as the SpeedMarathon and the Alcohol & Drug Marathon. These measures are preventive in nature and are intended to raise drivers' awareness of the existing dangers. Thanks to strong media campaigns, over 90% of drivers adhere to speed and alcohol limits, underlining the effectiveness of the measures. This is also reflected in the declining number of traffic accidents, which are often caused by the influence of alcohol or drugs, such as the figures from Bavaria, where over 4,400 accidents were caused by alcohol in 2020.

In order to further promote this development, transport organizations are involved in a variety of ways. Lectures and experience-oriented events are intended to raise awareness and educate young drivers in particular about the risks of alcohol and drug consumption. It is important not only to look at the direct consequences such as accidents, but also to address the distractions that are becoming more and more dangerous in road traffic. Studies show that more than half of drivers have gotten into dangerous situations due to distraction.

Safe through the summer

In addition to combating drugs and alcohol in traffic, it also highlights the dangers that summer driving can bring. The Safe Holiday campaign aims to ensure holidaymakers can arrive and return with peace of mind. The main topics discussed are the importance of rest breaks on long journeys and the ban on leaving children or animals in the car when it is hot.

Overall, the week of action shows that prevention in traffic is of crucial importance. It is up to each of us to take responsibility to increase safety on our roads. A good reason to think about these topics and take appropriate measures into account in your own behavior. Police and transport organizations are standing by to offer support and information - let's stay safe on the road!
