Fire drama in Crans-Montana: Over 40 dead and hundreds injured!
On New Year's Eve there was a tragic fire drama in Crans-Montana, a popular ski resort in Valais, in which more than 40 people lost their lives and over 115 sustained injuries. The information comes from the authorities, who reported it in a press conference. According to police chief Frédéric Gisler, many foreign winter tourists are among the victims.
The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. when an emergency call came in about a fire in the “Le Constellation” bar. This bar can accommodate up to 300 people and is known for its cocktails and shisha area. A large contingent consisting of 10 helicopters, 40 ambulances and around 150 emergency services was immediately mobilized to contain the fire and treat the injured. The affected area was cordoned off and a flight ban was imposed over Crans-Montana.
Initial investigation and support
The exact cause of the fire is still unclear; Investigations are ongoing. The first witnesses reported a possible connection with fireworks. However, the Valais Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud ruled out a terrorist attack. Amateur footage shows the devastating flames coming from the bar. In order to support affected families during this difficult time, psychological support services were set up.
In view of the dramatic situation, the Valais hospitals have also exhausted their capacities and Rega is sending ambulance jets for burn victims. Federal President Guy Parmelin postponed his New Year's address in order to travel to Valais and get a personal overview of the situation. Italy has also offered help and sent civil defense personnel.
Fire protection and security
This incident highlights the importance of fire safety measures in public facilities. Operators of bars and larger buildings must comply with the cantonal and national fire protection regulations of the Association of Cantonal Fire Insurance Companies (VKF). This includes, among other things, structural measures such as fire protection walls, clear escape routes and regular checks of the fire protection systems. It is also important to have well-trained employees for fire protection and evacuation. Regular maintenance and training are crucial to be prepared in the event of an emergency.
The tragedy in Crans-Montana reminds us how quickly unforeseen events can occur and how important preventive measures are to protect people's lives. We hope that those injured will recover quickly and those left behind will find comfort.
