Renovation of the Tonhalle Düsseldorf: 70 million for new splendor!

An extensive renovation project will become apparent in the heart of Düsseldorf in the coming years. The Tonhalle, a striking monument and part of the Ehrenhof ensemble, is facing extensive renovation due to massive water damage and inadequate drainage. As RP Online reports, white efflorescence is already visible on the red firestone on the facade, which indicates ongoing problems. The renovation costs are estimated at around 70 million euros and are expected to be completed by the early 2030s.

The work is currently concentrating on the west facade and the administration wing, where mold infestation has made some offices unusable. The municipal subsidiary IPM is responsible for the renovations and will completely renovate and modernize the administrative wing. This also includes the renewal of the house connections for drinking water and the distribution in the public toilet areas.

A move to container village

In order to be able to carry out the work undisturbed, the Tonhalle employees will move into a container village in front of the concert building until spring. These measures are necessary to ensure that the Tonhalle's event operations are not disrupted during the extensive renovation work. The planned work also includes the renovation of masonry joints, natural stone elements and sealing. The windows are also being replaced for energy reasons.

In September 2024, the city council approved the current work, and the decision on the second construction phase, which includes the remaining facade renovation and is expected to cost around 44 million euros over a period of four years, will be made in spring 2026.

On the history of the Tonhalle

The Tonhalle, originally built in 1926 for the GeSoLei exhibition, was subsequently rebuilt several times and converted into today's concert building between 1975 and 1978. Its versatility is demonstrated by its original use as a multi-purpose hall and planetarium. Nowadays the Tonhalle is a popular venue and attracts music lovers from all over the region.

As a result of the planned renovation measures, the Tonhalle will not only regain its former splendor, but will also be ready to take on the challenges of the future as a modern event venue. This means that this culturally and historically significant building will be preserved in the long term and made accessible to future generations.
