Duisburg: Last place in the ADFC bicycle climate test – alarm safety deficiencies!

In the current ADFC bicycle climate test, one of the largest cycling climate surveys in the world, Duisburg performs quite poorly. With only place 968 out of 1,047 cities in Germany, the city is at the bottom of 15 major cities. That reports Lokalklick.eu, which present the results based on the survey of over 1,100 Duisburg residents.

The main points of criticism from those surveyed are alarming: around 71% feel unsafe on the roads. The obstacles on the cycle paths and the conflicts with car drivers in particular cause discomfort. In addition, more than 80% rate the quality of the cycle paths as poor or worse and give a clear five for the control of illegal parking and construction site security. A bright spot is the rental bike system, which at least received a “satisfactory” grade, as well as the opening of one-way streets in the opposite direction.

Bicycle friendliness in Germany: A look at the overall situation

The ADFC survey took place from September to November 2024 and included over 213,000 participants who rated the bike-friendliness of their cities. The results are incorporated into traffic planning and help to make targeted improvements to the infrastructure. Thanks to the support of the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport, the test is an important indicator for promoting cycling. The results are on the interactive ADFC results page visible.

However, it also shows that the climate for cyclists in Germany is slightly improving. The overall grade of 3.92 may not be outstanding, but it represents an improvement compared to previous years adfc.de determines. Cities such as Frankfurt am Main and Hanover in particular have made significant progress, while Berlin received lower ratings due to a lack of commitment.

Duisburg's plans for improvement

In view of the poor results, the city has announced measures. Focus checks on illegal parking hotspots are planned for July in order to improve the situation. In addition, joint action days with the police are to be repeated to raise awareness among road users about the minimum overtaking distance. However, the ADFC highlights the city's ambivalent self-disclosure and sees a lack of progress using the example of cycle highway 1.

The city's budget for cycling infrastructure remains a major problem. It is currently only 4 euros per resident, a far cry from the recommended 10 to 30 euros per capita. The ADFC is calling for more commitment and resources to get Duisburg on the right path.

In summary, the ADFC bicycle climate test shows that many cities in Germany are on the right track, while Duisburg is currently lagging behind. In order to improve the safety and satisfaction of cyclists, comprehensive measures and a rethink in the city administration are necessary.
