93-year-old Ennepetaler falls for fraud – police warn!
In Ennepetal, a 93-year-old man fell victim to a perfidious scam. On July 16, 2025, he received a call claiming that his daughter was involved in a serious traffic accident. The story went so far that it was said that she hit a pregnant woman who then died. In order to free his daughter from the alleged emergency, the elderly gentleman was supposed to raise a mid-five-figure amount, it is reported Radio Ennepe Ruhr.
Although he felt sorry for his daughter's desperate situation, the Ennepetaler was only able to collect a lower five-figure amount and jewelry. When the money was handed over, an older man appeared at his home address and accepted the money and jewelry. What initially seemed like an urgent need for help, and where he perhaps sensed a good deal, has turned into a bitter reality.
Beware of con artists!
The police also point out that no institution will ever demand money if relatives are involved in a traffic accident. This means: If someone shows up at your door and demands money or valuables, you should be extremely careful.
The right reaction
But how do you react correctly when you receive a similar call? The first step is to contact the family. It often quickly becomes clear about the condition of the relatives. It is also advisable not to hand over money to strangers. Easier said than done, we all know that. Strategies to avoid phone scams, as in NDR described, are enormously helpful and should be taken seriously.
- Immer bei der eigenen Familie Rücksprache halten.
- Keine Gelder an unbekannte Personen übergeben.
- Im Zweifel die Notrufnummer 110 wählen.
- Ältere Personen sollten sich aus Telefonbüchern austragen lassen oder ihre Nummer ändern.
Changing your phone number and leaving the phone book are usually free of charge and can make things much more difficult for new fraudsters. The police also recommend abbreviating your phone number to disguise your age and be less vulnerable.
The incident in Ennepetal shows in an alarming way how important it is to remain vigilant and take action against fraud. All it takes is a moment of carelessness and money can be taken out of your pocket.
