Breckerfeld 2026: Mayor optimistic for the future despite deficit!
In the Hanseatic city of Breckerfeld, the draft budget for 2026 was presented on November 6, 2025, which has a deficit of four million euros. However, Mayor André Dahlhaus was optimistic, as there is a large reserve available that can cushion the deficit. This reports Lokaldirekt.de.
The financial challenges are obvious: While expenses increase, income remains constant. The estimated annual result for 2026 is a loss of 3,984,000 euros. However, this does not mean the end of the road, because the city of Breckerfeld will be classified as “Abundant” in 2026. As a result, it will not receive key allocations because its financial strength exceeds its needs. This situation arises, among other things, from high trade tax payments at the end of 2024.
Rising costs and planned investments
The rising costs, particularly in the area of youth welfare, have increased by around one million euros in the last two to three years. Despite these deficits, the city has been able to record positive financial statements in the past, such as 2.4 million euros in 2024. Fortunately, the necessary deficits for 2026 can be covered by an equalization reserve of 8.4 million euros.
The planned investments for 2026 sound promising and include, among other things:
- Anbau der offenen Ganztagsschule mit geschätzten Kosten von 1 Million Euro.
- Sanierung der Berghauser Straße/Wäscherwiese/In der Bredde für insgesamt 800.000 Euro, von denen 50% gefördert werden.
- Geh- und Radwege mit einem Budget von 1,4 Millionen Euro, das ebenfalls durch Fördermittel finanziert wird.
- Sanierung der Altkanäle in der L528 im Rahmen umfangreicher Straßenbauarbeiten.
Financial situation in Bavaria in comparison
The financial situation of many municipalities in Bavaria is similarly strained, which leads to little scope for investments, climate measures and the integration of refugees. At the beginning of November, the state government and the municipalities agreed to increase the municipal financial equalization for 2025 by over five percent to almost 12 billion euros. The largest part of this compensation falls on key allocations, which will total 4.85 billion euros in 2025. Municipalities with lower tax revenues particularly benefit from these allocations, which shows how important municipal financial equalization is for budgets in Bavaria br.de informed.
Overall, the financial pressure on cities and municipalities throughout Germany will remain noticeable, which does not make planning for the coming years any easier.
