Euskirchen tests visibility: Police call on cyclists to clarify!
An important campaign to increase visibility in road traffic recently took place in Euskirchen. The police carried out a so-called “light test” in which two-wheeler drivers on Wilhelmstrasse were checked for their equipment. The test aimed to promote safety, especially during the dark season, without any fear of fines. The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reports that Chief Inspector Anke Weber highlighted the event as an opportunity for education and information.
The light test lasted two and a half hours and during this time the police stopped 39 two-wheeler riders. It was noticeable that many of them had helmets but were not wearing them. It also became apparent that many sporty bicycles are often not equipped with the necessary equipment such as bells or reflectors. At a time when visibility in the dark is crucial, such deficiencies are important to address.
Visibility in traffic
A particularly important aspect of the test was raising drivers' awareness of their own visibility. In the dark season, the difference in visibility between dark and light clothing is significant. According to experts, dark clothing only has a visibility range of around 25 meters. This means that drivers often recognize pedestrians and cyclists too late to brake in time. Bright and reflective materials increase visibility up to 150 meters, which not only increases safety but can also save lives. The fine catalogue explained this in detail and emphasized that light-colored clothing helps you stop at 50 km/h.
Ingrid Al-Hasan, one of the drivers, was praised for her good visibility and received a sticker from the traffic police. She emphasizes how important it is to raise awareness of this issue among children and grandchildren. After all, the next generation is currently on our roads and should be able to correctly assess the dangers.
The benefits of high-visibility vests
Speaking of visibility: Wearing high-visibility vests is also a simple but effective way to increase safety. High visibility vests are essential not only for workers but also for cyclists and pedestrians. They are made of fluorescent material and feature reflective strips that reflect light back to its sources. In many countries, such as France and Italy, they are even required by law. It is recommended to always keep such vests in your car to provide additional security in emergency situations.
In summary, visibility on the road is a key concern, especially in the dark months of the year. Targeted campaigns such as the light test in Euskirchen promote awareness of the importance of visibility. In this way, each individual can contribute to making the streets safer.
