Tragic swimming accidents: four dead on the first weekend of summer

In Germany, the first weekend of summer was a tragic time, marked by swimming accidents in which at least four people lost their lives, including two children. The painful incident that shocked the people of Cologne occurred in Rather See, where a three-year-old boy drowned. Bathers discovered him lifeless in the water and immediately attempted to resuscitate him, but all efforts were in vain. Radio Euskirchen reports on these heartbreaking events and notes that in other cities, such as Frankfurt am Main, a nine-year-old girl was taken lifeless from an outdoor swimming pool.

A 40-year-old man was found dead from a lake in Leverkusen. He was there with friends on Saturday evening, but stayed behind after they returned home, which ultimately led to the tragic accident. In the Hanover region, a 94-year-old man died from his injuries after a swimming accident. The reasons for these accidents are often unclear. The situation highlights the risks that can be associated with swimming in bodies of water.

Increasing number of swimming accidents

The current balance sheet of the DLRG shows that the number of drowning cases in Germany increased alarmingly in 2023. As of September 10, 353 people had died in swimming accidents, 75 more than the previous year. These figures make it clear that the summer months are particularly dangerous and that people are often careless when swimming and doing water sports.

DLRG President Ute Vogt also points out a frightening trend, as she pointed out the increasing number of drownings at the beginning of summer. What is worrying is that the number of swimming accidents has reached the highest in five years. August is traditionally a hot month and the DLRG expects many people to jump into the water despite the risks.

A look at the devastating statistics

A closer look at the statistics shows that at least 411 people drowned in Germany in 2024, which is the highest number since 2019. For many people, especially older people, swimming in high temperatures can pose a risk. daily news also reports that almost 60 percent of those who died were over 50 years old. This raises the question of how important it is to take your health into account when swimming.

Already 14 children up to the age of ten drowned in 2024, a number that fortunately represents a decrease compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the danger in garden ponds and paddling pools should not be underestimated. Children in particular should learn to swim early, even if around 20 percent of students leave primary school without swimming skills. An ongoing campaign aims to raise awareness of these dangers.

At the same time, the DLRG warns against the closure of around 800 public swimming pools, as they can often no longer be operated without comprehensive renovation. This could lead to a further increase in swimming accidents and make the situation even worse.

The sad events of this weekend should be a wake-up call for all of us. Safety awareness when swimming and proactive action can save lives. It is time for us to become aware of the dangers and work together to ensure a safe bathing culture.
