Bird flu now in the Euskirchen district: danger for poultry farmers is increasing!

There is currently seriously worrying news in the region around Euskirchen. Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has been proven to have reached the Euskirchen district. As the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reports, the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed in a dead crane in Füssenich by the National Reference Laboratory at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI).

An outbreak of avian influenza in a wild bird in the region confirms the alarming warnings, and Dr. Reinhard Klaas, the head of the district veterinary office, calls on all poultry farmers to be more careful. “It is our responsibility to protect the health of the animals,” explains Klaas.

Increased caution is required

Another suspected case of a dead crane from Euskirchen is currently being investigated. The safety of captive birds is a top priority to avoid the introduction of avian influenza. The Veterinary Office has strongly recommended that all poultry farmers comply with the necessary biosecurity measures. This includes, among other things, that food may only be given in places inaccessible to wild birds and that all equipment and food must be stored in a way that is safe for wild birds.

  • Fütterung nur an unzugänglichen Stellen für Wildvögel.
  • Futter, Einstreu und Geräte sicher lagern.
  • Nur frisches Leitungswasser verwenden.
  • Keine Speisereste oder Grünfutter verfüttern.
  • Tägliche Reinigung und Desinfektion der Geräte.
  • Jede Neuanschaffung von Tieren muss in Quarantäne erfolgen.

In addition, poultry farmers should regularly report their populations to the veterinary office and the NRW Animal Disease Control Board. The veterinary office is closely monitoring the situation and will adapt prevention measures accordingly.

The danger is real

The risk of outbreaks in poultry farms is considered high, particularly due to the intense migratory activity of wild birds. It is all the more important that the population actively participates: Anyone who discovers dead migratory or water birds should definitely report them to the veterinary office. The GPS data of the location and the bird species must be provided, and it is strongly advised not to touch dead or sick wild birds yourself.

Avian influenza is a life-threatening disease for affected animals, particularly chickens and turkeys. Housing the captive birds is strongly recommended to prevent the spread of the disease.

The latest developments highlight the need for rapid and coordinated action in the region. The dramatic situation is an important reminder that the health of our poultry flocks is a shared responsibility. Stay alert and informed.
