Chlorine gas alarm in Gelsenkirchen: Fire brigade on a large scale operation in the evening!

In Gelsenkirchen today there was an alarming incident in the public swimming pool on Adenauerallee. When replacing chlorine gas bottles, chlorine escaped, which was caused by a leak in a valve. The operators of the swimming pool acted quickly and immediately alerted the fire department via the emergency number 112. This led to a large deployment of fire brigade personnel who were on hand with appropriate protective suits and special tools to deal with the situation. According to mobil.express.de, however, there was never any danger to the bathers, which was a relief for everyone involved.

The fire department was on site with a total of 25 emergency services. They wore chemical protective suits (CSA) and proceeded with extreme caution to eliminate the leak. During the entire operation, bathing operations in the other areas of the swimming pool were unaffected, so that both bathers present and swimmers in other parts of the swimming pool were not at risk. After the problem was successfully resolved, the site could be handed over to the operator again after measurements without any chlorine contamination.

A look at the security precautions

The events surrounding the chlorine gas leak show once again how important safety and emergency prevention are in chemistry. Chlorine is a substance used in many industries and its handling requires careful attention. A leaflet on the safe use of chlorine was recently published, which was developed by the Raw Materials and Chemical Industry Association in collaboration with a wide range of experts. This publication, relaunched in June 2025, is intended for executives, business owners, and workplace safety professionals. It contains valuable information on risk assessments, technical protective measures and emergency management, as vci.de reports.

Safety when using chlorine should not be neglected because, despite all precautions, accidents can occur. This is also shown by a current incident from Düsseldorf, which also involved a suspected chlorine gas leak. The emergency services there reacted quickly and were initially unable to detect any direct leaks, but did take precautionary measures. A total of around 60 firefighters were deployed here to check and secure the situation. You can find more information about this at feuerwehr.de.

Awareness of safety standards and preventive measures is crucial to respond quickly and efficiently to incidents like this. The smooth operation of the fire brigade in Gelsenkirchen is a good example of how coordinated measures can protect lives and must be seen as a template for future operations.
