Tedesco before return: Will he be coach at Fenerbahce Istanbul?

The coaching landscape in European football remains dynamic, and one name in particular is currently buzzing around: Domenico Tedesco. The former Schalke 04 coach is considered a potential successor to José Mourinho at Fenerbahce Istanbul after he was relieved of his duties on August 29, 2025. Ruhr24 reports that Tedesco was recommended to the board by Fenerbahce sporting director Devin Özek. A new opportunity could therefore open up for the 39-year-old Italian-German after he has been waiting for a new challenge since his dismissal as Belgian national coach in January 2025.

A look at Tedesco's impressive career makes it clear why he is being considered for Fenerbahce. As coach of Schalke 04 from 2017 to 2019, he achieved some highs, including a runner-up finish in his first season, which greatly pleased the fans. Despite being sacked after a series of unfortunate results, including a 7-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League, Tedesco remains fondly remembered by many Schalke supporters. While the “Knappen” were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga after his dismissal, he also gained experience at Spartak Moscow and RB Leipzig, where he won the DFB Cup, and coached the Belgian national team. Wikipedia summarizes his career facts and successes, which are characterized by a clear coaching philosophy.

A hot backseat at Fenerbahce

But Tedesco is not the only name on the table among Fenerbahce officials. In addition to him, other respected coaches such as Luciano Spalletti and Ange Postecoglu are also being discussed. TheWest reports that discussions about a new coach are already underway and Sebastian Hoeneß from VfB Stuttgart has made it clear that he is not interested in a change. The fact that Fenerbahce supporters are hoping for a successful signing puts additional pressure on Tedesco and his competitors.

So could Tedesco be the next big coup for Fenerbahce? A signing would certainly delight fans and could also provide the coach with an excellent platform to showcase his abilities once again. Of course, it remains to be seen how the negotiations and considerations by those responsible will go. After a lengthy absence from the dugout, this opportunity could be just what Tedesco needs to get back into contention.
