Big NRW Summer Concert 2025: Airy melodies in the open air!
Today, July 12, 2025, a very special event will take place in the airship hangar at the Essen/Mülheim airport site that will make the hearts of music lovers beat faster. The NRW Summer Concert 2025 presents a variety of melodies from film music, classical music, musicals and opera, all free of charge for the audience. Let's look at the details that make this event so unique.
The theme of the concert revolves around the fascinating element of “flying”. Visitors can look forward to hits such as “Bumblebee Flight” and “Fly me to the Moon”, which will be performed by outstanding artists such as Sharon Kam on the clarinet, Tassilo Probst on the violin, Bonita Niessen as a soprano and tenor Jorge Puerta. The ensemble is accompanied by the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen under the direction of Rasmus Baumann, a conductor known for his brilliant work.
A feast for the senses
The event will take place on Saturday, July 12th, in front of the impressive airship hangar, where there is plenty of space for numerous visitors. And physical well-being is also taken care of: guests are invited to bring blankets and picnic baskets to make themselves comfortable during the concert. The orchestra, with around 120 members one of the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia, plays a varied selection of pieces - including Adele's "Skyfall" and the film music for "Back to the Future".
Admission begins at 6 p.m., while the concert will start at 7:45 p.m. No ticket is required; everyone is welcome. A free shuttle service takes guests comfortably from the parking lot at Messe Essen to the airship hangar. In the opening speech, Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst and WDR director Katrin Vernau will welcome the audience.
Live broadcast for everyone
Anyone who cannot be there in person still has the opportunity to experience the entire event live on WDR television and cultural radio WDR 3. The broadcast begins on July 12th at 8:15 p.m., accompanied by the charismatic presenter Anna Planken, who will lead the evening.
This is not only a musical highlight for local visitors, but also represents a valuable contribution to culture in North Rhine-Westphalia. The state government's summer concerts take place annually at different locations, and the commitment to free, public events has established itself as an important part of the cultural scene in the region.
