Construction work stops IC 34: Train connections between Dortmund and Siegerland drastically restricted!
A big change is coming: How Ruhr24 reported, the Intercity line 34 (IC 34) between Dortmund and Dillenburg will no longer be served from December 2026. Deutsche Bahn has decided to completely close the line from July 2026 due to extensive construction work on the Ruhr-Sieg route. This means that commuters and travelers have to prepare for some drastic changes.
The announced construction work is anything but small: eleven major closures and a total of 183 working days are necessary to bring the infrastructure into shape. From July 11, 2026, there will no longer be any capacity available for IC 34. The train's capacity utilization is currently quite low with fewer than 100 passengers per trip.
Alternative transport connections
But don't worry, the railway has taken precautions! During the construction work, the regional trains RB 91 and RE 34 will maintain traffic. In some cases there will even be replacement buses so that travelers are not completely left out in the cold. From December 2026, the RE 34 will run hourly between Dortmund and Siegerland and will be operated by WestfalenBahn. Previously, the Dortmund-Siegerland Express ran every two hours, supplemented by the IC 34 every other hour.
It is a change that will affect many rail users. Even the timetable information will be adjusted: both train lines will be run as “RE 34” in the future. Anyone who wants to travel on these routes in the future will have to prepare for new departure times.
The big picture in view
Viewed in a broader context, this measure is part of ongoing efforts to improve the German rail infrastructure. It may seem like a small inconvenience to some, but in the long run both travelers and the economy benefit. After all, a well-functioning rail connection is the backbone of mobility.
Of course, there are challenges in other areas too. In the financial sector, for example, OANDA As noted, trading in foreign exchange and other margin products involves high risks that should not be underestimated. Investors should always be aware of the risks and seek advice before embarking on such adventures.
These developments bring with them changes that affect many people. It remains to be seen how travelers will react to the drastic changes and whether the new offers can offer the usual comfort. In the meantime, the first thing to say is: Well planned is half the battle!
