ASV Hamm-Westphalia has to be bitterly relegated to the 3rd league!

Bad news for ASV Hamm-Westphalia: The application to increase the 2nd handball Bundesliga to 19 teams has failed. This means that the club has to be relegated to the 3rd league. This decision was announced on Thursday afternoon, and managing director Markus Fuchs expressed disappointment in a club statement about the lack of urgency, which led to the motion not being voted on. Fuchs spoke of negative effects on personnel planning and organization as there was uncertainty for a long time. “The topic has now been checked off,” he explained, while the ASV is working intensively on planning for the 2025/26 season in the 3rd league.

In a review of the current developments, those responsible for ASV and Dessau-Roßlauer HV issued a joint statement before the catch-up game. Dessau-Roßlau won against TuSEM Essen with 30:24 (18:14) and ASV fans are therefore called upon to continue to hope that they will stay in the league, even though the reality has now sealed relegation. HBL GmbH also informed that the Federal Court of the German Handball Federation has overturned the Federal Sports Court's ruling of May 12, 2025, which could bring additional changes in the relegation battle. However, this appears to have little impact on the final decision regarding Hamm-Westphalia's relegation as the foundations have already been laid.

A look at the relegation battle

Things are simmering in the league itself. 1. VfL Potsdam is relegated and will leave the league. In the exciting relegation battle, HC Erlangen, SG BBM Bietigheim and TVB Stuttgart are now fighting to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga. Erlangen is currently one point behind the remaining place and has to give everything in the coming games to improve in the table. ThSV Eisenach, on the other hand, has already secured relegation as eleventh in the table, while the situation for Wetzlar remains tense with just four points ahead of the first relegation place. They still have three crucial games in which they need to collect points.

The situation for TVB Stuttgart is also anything but safe. After a defeat against Hamburg and two bankruptcies against direct competitors, things are looking bleak. But a recent victory over the Rhein-Neckar Löwen gives hope, even if the goal difference of -124 is an alarm signal. The stumbling blocks in the next games against Berlin, Göppingen and Leipzig could decide his fate.

The fans of ASV Hamm-Westphalia now have to prepare for new challenges in the 3rd league and can look forward to the coming season, even if the disappointment of the relegated team is still noticeable. The club will be all the more challenged to put together a powerful team and assert itself in the new league.
