E-scooters and traffic safety
Given the increasing use of e-scooters, road safety is of central importance. According to current statistics, e-scooter accidents in Lower Saxony will account for around 0.6 percent of all traffic accidents in 2023. In comparison, bicycle accidents represent a much greater risk at around six percent. It is striking that 446 cyclists lost their lives in traffic last year, which is a worrying development. Despite the increase in e-scooter users, the police remain vigilant due to the number of accidents, especially with regard to accidents under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which are continuously monitored.
The figures show that 151 cases of such accidents involving e-scooters were recorded in 2023, which represents only a slight decrease compared to the previous year. Experts expect similar figures in this area for 2024. The question remains how the trend will develop and whether responsible driving and safe use of e-scooters can be promoted. If the number of accident-free driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs actually increases next year, this could be a step in the right direction. According to the current figures, there were 1,605 accident-free trips in this context in 2023.
