Hamm is investing 11.7 million euros in new school canteens and sports halls!
The city of Hamm has big plans: a total of 11.7 million euros will be invested in the construction of a new cafeteria and two sports halls at local schools. The plan is to significantly improve the educational offerings while at the same time creating a modern space for leisure activities. These comprehensive measures are of great importance not only for the students, but also for the entire city, which wants a bright future that benefits everyone.
A new OGS cafeteria is being planned for the Kettelerschule. This is to be built as part of a larger OGS package between the auditorium and the sports hall. The total costs for the new cafeteria construction amount to 2.5 million euros, with the city contributing 640,000 euros. The plan is for construction to start in spring 2026 and be completed in 2027. A main committee will decide on the project on July 7th.
Sports halls in a double pack
But that's not all! The Johannes and Erich Kästner Schools can also look forward to new gymnasiums. The investments in the two sports halls amount to 4.6 million euros each, which adds up to around 9.2 million euros. The fact that both halls are being built as a “double pack” is intended to achieve synergy effects in the construction process and financing. Here too, the city has optimized the construction period so that the new halls should be available by the beginning of the 2028/29 school year, with construction starting in spring 2027.
What is particularly innovative is that the new sports halls are designed as single sports halls and are equipped with green roofs and photovoltaic systems. These environmentally friendly aspects show that the city of Hamm also has a good hand when it comes to climate responsibility and sustainable building.
A further step towards modern school education are the planned new buildings, which are secured by a solid financing concept via the municipal subsidiary Hamm Invest. In the last three years, the city has already created 1,500 places at open all-day schools, and there remains no doubt that the investments in modernized educational spaces in Hamm will have a direct impact on the quality of education. In addition, in the coming years the focus will be on clearly promoting all-day care for primary school children.
This extensive educational construction offensive shows that the city of Hamm thinks and acts in a future-oriented manner. The measures will not only enrich the students' learning and leisure activities, but also contribute to increasing the quality of life throughout the city. And even if the coffers are often not full, education is not skimped on - an attitude that is now noticeable in many municipalities, such as Munich. According to its mayor Dieter Reiter, it is important not to save money on education despite tight budgets. A strict focus on sustainable building practices and diverse educational opportunities is the key to the future.
Whether at the Kettelerschule, the Johannes or Erich Kästner School – the investments in modern school rooms are a step in the right direction. It will be exciting to see how the projects will develop in the coming months and what other positive surprises the city of Hamm has in store for its citizens.
