Jazz highlight for young people: UniJAZZity inspires in Bad Hamm!
A hot tip for all jazz lovers and music enthusiasts: On Friday, November 21st, the Westphalia Children's and Youth Jazz Orchestra will be playing in the Kurhaus Bad Hamm, UniJAZZity, playing at 7:30 p.m. More than 30 young talents between the ages of 10 and 18 will be on stage and show what they can do. These talented musicians come from all over Westphalia and have achieved considerable success over the years.
The program promises great entertainment because it includes the typical big band sound of classic modernism. The program includes pieces from the legendary Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band from the 1960s and 70s as well as arrangements by the Peter Herbolzheimer Rhythm Combination & Brass, which are rousingly staged by the singer Frida Greber. The orchestra is accompanied by a professional team of lecturers, including Patrick Porsch, Tobias Schütte and Dieter Kuhlmann.
A look back
The orchestra was founded in 2009 by Dr. Wolfgang König and has since taken a permanent place in the Westphalian jazz scene. During this time they not only won the 2016 WDR Jazz Prize for outstanding projects, but also released two CDs, “Hit the ground” (2015) and “Get in line” (2019). UniJAZZity has established itself as a platform for many emerging talents and is often seen as a springboard for a musical career.
The rehearsals and meetings of the young instrumentalists take place in the rural idyll of the Haus Nottbeck cultural asset. The cultural asset not only offers the perfect setting for rehearsals, but also a place where young jazz musicians can come into contact with experienced musicians.
Commitment and future
Some members of the orchestra are now studying music at universities, while others play in renowned youth jazz orchestras. Former members like Jerry Lu teach and remain connected to the musical community. This clearly shows how important the commitment of UniJAZZity for the promotion of musical talent.
