New mayor: Marc Herter opens the Hamm council meeting!

It was an important day for the city of Hamm: On November 3rd, 2025, the first meeting of the new council took place after the election on September 14th. Mayor Marc Herter was ceremoniously inaugurated into office. In an atmosphere characterized by respect and a spirit of optimism, the senior councilwoman spoke up Monika Simshäuser, Herter spoke and sworn in. With a clear focus on the responsibility of all council members, he called for constructive solutions and the defense of the basic democratic order.

An unusual picture emerged from the new council, which now consists of 64 members – six more than before. With a breath of fresh air, new political constellations have also emerged. The AfD appeared with its 10 seats, but was not united. The committees will be chaired by, among others, council members Simshäuser from the SPD, Jochen Dornseifer from the CDU and Christian Fecke from the SPD, while the AfD will appoint a committee chairman in the economic sector for the first time.

Family-friendly urban development

Mayor Herter has a clear goal in mind: He wants to develop Hamm into the most family-friendly city. He focuses on the well-being of families and invites citizens to take an active part in urban development. Ideas and suggestions are warmly welcomed to improve the quality of life for all generations. This message was clearly communicated by Herter as he took up his new position and set the course for the coming years.

The new council has also reduced the number of specialist committees from 18 to 14, which promises to streamline working structures. The committee chairmen are supported with an expense allowance of around 500 euros per month. The first working session of the council is scheduled for December 9th, followed by the constitution of the seven district councils in the coming days.

Creativity in competition

Whether in the development of a family-friendly city or in creative competitions: Hamm seems to be on a promising path. Citizens are invited to become part of this change and to actively help shape it. This not only strengthens the sense of community, but also promotes cohesion in the city.
