Autumn storms threaten NRW: Maltese give effective safety tips!

In the coming months we will be facing the dreaded autumn storms again in Cologne and all of North Rhine-Westphalia. Strong winds and rain are common in Europe between October and December. Olivia Koziarowski from the Maltese NRW emphasizes the importance of taking precautionary measures to minimize the risks of such weather events. Before a weather warning, it is advisable to secure loose objects such as bricks and garden furniture to avoid danger.

A storm that swept across North Rhine-Westphalia last week has already caused numerous fallen trees and caused problems for motorway and rail traffic. Such damage to systems is often only part of the dangers that arise during extreme weather events. Experts warn that the number of these events is increasing and attacks on critical infrastructure can also threaten security. According to the experts, adequate crisis management and preparedness are essential in order to better cope with the challenges.

Advice on crisis resilience

To be on the safe side in strong storms, the Maltese recommend not going into the forest and seeking shelter in solid buildings. Experts advise drivers to avoid bridges and drive to safe parking spaces so as not to endanger themselves and others.

The NINA warning app and the warning weather app from the German Weather Service (DWD) provide helpful information about upcoming weather conditions. These apps are a great tool for always being informed and making the right decisions in an emergency. The “ready-as-never” campaign, which was launched by the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of the Interior, promotes volunteer work in fire and disaster protection and increases awareness of self-help.

The role of disaster preparedness

But who actually takes care of long-term disaster preparedness? The German Red Cross (DRK) is committed to disaster protection in order to improve the resilience of affected population groups in crisis situations. Particularly in the context of advancing climate change, the dangers for vulnerable groups are becoming ever greater. It is therefore essential to implement well-thought-out disaster preparedness that relies on local knowledge and existing structures.

The measures proposed by the DRK include hazard identification and risk-based analyses. Needs-oriented, socio-economic factors are also taken into account in order to be able to provide effective help on site. Not only structured measures such as the construction of storm-proof community centers can be used, but also training for teachers and the development of early warning systems. Well-organized disaster preparedness ultimately also relieves the burden on rescue workers and enables them to provide targeted assistance to those in need.

Awareness of one's own safety and the ability to protect oneself and others is not only important in times of acute crises. The right preparations enable us to be prepared even in seemingly calm phases if the unforeseen should occur. So stay vigilant and keep yourself informed about the latest developments!
