Herford celebrates the inauguration of the Archaeological Window on August 23rd!

A significant opening is coming soon in the heart of Herford: on August 23, 2025, the Archaeological Window will be inaugurated, a project that has been in the works for two years. The inauguration program has already been finalized and it promises to be a real treat for those interested in culture. The celebrations begin on Saturday morning with a guided tour, followed by a service in the neighboring cathedral church. Afterwards there will be a standing reception where members of the Dieter Ernstmeier Foundation, actors, experts and numerous guests will have their say. This foundation made a significant contribution to the construction of the Archaeological Window and significantly supported its realization. According to Radio Herford the costs for the entire project amount to an impressive 4.4 million euros.

The Archaeological Window will not only be a visual delight, but also a place where the fascinating finds from the Herford Women's Monastery from the Middle Ages will be presented in a modern way. With special attention to the exhibition design, the historical artifacts are brought to new life, which should make the visit a unique experience.

Important support from the region

What is particularly interesting is that 400,000 euros from the “Heimat-Zeugnis” program will flow into the inner workings of the Archaeological Window. This also gives the project a regional connection, which underlines the connection of citizens to their history. When handing over the grant notice, State Secretary Daniel Sieveke made it clear his enthusiasm for architect Preckel's innovative concept. The groundbreaking ceremony was already planned for mid-June, and all eyes are now looking forward to the completion of the project, which will soon become a reality, as Westfalen-Blatt reports.

The initiative not only reflects the commitment of the city of Herford, but is also part of the larger “Restart Museums” movement, which aims to revitalize cultural institutions after the pandemic. The start of the Archaeological Window could not only be significant for Herford, but also serve as a model for other cities that would like to launch similar projects in the future.
