Wanne-Eickel main station shines after a 25 million euro investment!
Today, November 3, 2025, Deutsche Bahn (DB) completed the comprehensive renovation of the Wanne-Eickel main station. This major project marks a significant step towards improving the region's infrastructure and shows how important modern mobility is in everyday life. A total of around 25 million euros were invested in the renovation, with financing secured by the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association (VRR) and the DB as part of the Modernization Offensive 3 (MOF 3).
The modernization work covered the entire station, from the underpass to the edge of the platform. The renewed platforms, which are between 220 and 390 meters long and cover a total area of around 9,500 m², now offer step-free entry by maintaining the height of 76 cm. This significantly improves accessibility for all passengers.
Redesigned spaces for travelers
Particularly striking are the new weather protection houses on tracks 3/4 and 5/6 as well as the new roof, around 30 meters long, on the platform to tracks 1/2. The modernization not only brings functional changes, but also a pleasant quality of stay for travelers: new benches, display cabinets and waste bins are available to create a clean and inviting ambience.
The station signs have also been given a new look. The name “Wanne-Eickel Hbf” will be changed to “Herne-Wanne-Eickel Hbf” from December 14th, which is intended to strengthen the location’s identity. In addition, the pedestrian underpass received a fresh design with modern wall cladding and improved lighting, which not only increases safety but also ensures a brighter and friendlier ambience.
Further developments at the station
The newly built stairs and the installation of a guidance system for the blind are further steps towards accessibility and user-friendliness of the station. A new 75-inch monitor in the station building now informs travelers about the next departing trains and ensures a smooth flow of information.
However, the project does not end here. Further modernizations, including the renovation of the station building, are planned as part of the funding initiative to increase the attractiveness and accessibility of stations (FABB3). Talks are already underway between the city and the DB to further develop the station and its surroundings.
In addition, the Ministry of Homeland, Municipal Affairs, Construction and Digitalization of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia provides grants for renovation as part of urban development funding. Future measures include the modernization and expansion of the bike station as well as improving the connection to Wannen city center. This shows that there is really a good knack for the development of the region.
Overall, the completed complete renovation of the Wanne-Eickel train station contributes to increasing transport connections and quality of life in the region and is another step in the right direction for modern mobility.
