Herne is looking for a committed volunteer: your chance in press work!

In the city of Herne, which is located in the heart of the Ruhr area with around 160,000 inhabitants, movement in public relations is the order of the day. The city's press office is looking for a volunteer (f/m/d) from October 1, 2025 to strengthen the team and bring a breath of fresh air to media work. With a strong administration that employs around 3,000 people, Herne is not only an important location in the region, but also offers a wide range of leisure and cultural offerings, ranging from industrial culture to modern architecture. The city's convenient location makes access to other parts of the Ruhr area easier and ensures that interesting projects reach the area.

The traineeship is designed to last 18 months and is designed in a full-time format (39 hours per week) with remuneration according to pay group 6 TVöD. Part-time is of course also possible. The ideal candidate not only has a degree in journalism, PR, communication sciences or media studies, but also has already gained initial experience in the journalistic or press sector - at least three months of internships or freelance work should be proven. It is particularly important to have a strong interest in local political events in order to be able to competently represent the diversity and current issues in Herne.

Insight into the tasks

The traineeship covers a varied range of activities. This includes preparing and supporting press conferences and discussions as well as advising departments on media work. The volunteers also help write press releases and support the city's online offerings including social media activities. Anyone interested in this position should enjoy teamwork and creativity.

An additional plus point of the internship is participation in a PR volunteer course at the Herne Journalism Center, where in-depth training is guaranteed, as well as an internship in another press office, which offers valuable insights into the various facets of press work. The support of experienced editors ensures that even newcomers to media work are well prepared for the challenges.

Application details

The application deadline ends on August 10, 2025, and interviews are expected to take place in mid-August, of course including a practical exercise to round off the application. The city of Herne attaches particular importance to equal opportunities and expressly encourages women and people with severe disabilities to apply.
