The residents around Herne will have to be patient this August weekend because the A42 motorway will be completely closed for several days. How Ruhr24 reports, the lockdown will come into effect on Friday, August 15th at 9pm and will last until Monday, August 18th at 5am. The two directions between Herne-Crange and Herne-Baukau are affected.
The complete closure of the A42 is necessary in order to connect the Baukau tunnel to the motorway and to demolish and rebuild the northern bridges at the Herne intersection. The 550 meter long tunnel has been under construction since 2019 as part of the six-lane expansion of the A43 and will in future provide a direct connection from the A43 (towards Münster) to the A42 (towards Oberhausen). It is interesting that the tunnel also passes under some railway lines.
