Black ice warning: Paderborn and Höxter are spared from accidents!
Winter has Germany firmly in its grip and brings with it black ice and frosty temperatures. While the entire western half of the country is affected, the Paderborn region is particularly noticeable. The German Weather Service (DWD) issued an official level 2 weather warning on Saturday evening, which was valid until late in the evening of December 27th. It has been consistently slippery on the roads in the last few days, which has resulted in a number of traffic insecurity.
In total, according to nw.de, seven accidents were reported in the Paderborn district on Sunday morning, but fortunately no injuries were reported. An outstanding incident occurred in the neighboring Höxter district, where a car left the road in Borgentreich and landed on its roof. Here too, the driver remained uninjured. A serious accident on Sunday morning on state road 886 near Born was more tragic: a vehicle slipped off the road due to slippery conditions and crashed into a tree; the driver was seriously injured.
Frosty prospects
The lack of serious accidents was due to the attentive driving style of drivers. However, caution is advised: Paderborn police appeal to road users to drive more slowly and always expect slippery roads. Gritting vehicles were in use across the entire district to ensure safety on the roads. But the weather conditions will remain frosty until further notice. There are even some snowfall forecasts on Monday.
The winter weather conditions did not only affect the Paderborn region. In the western and eastern half of Germany, there was an overall increased risk of ice due to freezing precipitation, reports spiegel.de. On Sunday night, many drivers suffered misfortune when the roads became dangerous due to black ice. In Saxony, for example, 32 accidents were recorded early in the morning. In many cities there were even pile-ups that overloaded hospital emergency rooms.
Winter weather in Germany
According to the reports, Germany can expect frosty temperatures until the beginning of next week, which could even fall to values between -3 and -9 degrees in some regions. In the central low mountain range and in parts of Franconia and the Upper Palatinate, temperatures of around -13 degrees are not uncommon. This means that hospitals are also under heavy strain due to slippery-related injuries, especially bone fractures, reports zeit.de.
Nevertheless, visitors and residents of the Paderborn region should take the winter conditions seriously and only undertake necessary excursions. The weather remains unpredictable and good driving skills are needed now more than ever. So stay careful and plan your trips ahead!
