Art and memory: Aorta” inspires people in Kleve with two events!
Something exciting is happening in Kleve: The newly founded cultural association “Aorta” is starting with two events in the Neue Mitte on November 8th and 9th. What’s special about this club? It brings together both professional artists and amateur creatives from various areas such as music, theater and fine art. The aim is to strengthen Kleve as a place for cultural encounters and to promote diverse perspectives among young cultural activists. For example, the club's first public presentation under the motto “Open Up” is on the program on November 8th. A colorful program of concerts, workshops and dance performances will be offered from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The following day, November 9th, the “Remember” commemoration ceremony will take place, which will mark the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht. This night, which took place from November 9th to 10th, 1938, marked the beginning of open violence by the National Socialists against the Jewish minority in Germany and Austria. More than 1,300 people were murdered and around 1,400 synagogues were severely damaged or destroyed. On this day of remembrance, “Aorta” offers space to remember the victims from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program ranges from concerts and performances to exhibitions and installations to draw attention to the dark history and keep the memory alive.
Commemoration of the pogrom night
The memorial event in Kleve is part of a larger trend, as the victims of Nazi crimes are remembered in many places. The regional bishop Kristina Kühnbaum-Schmidt also commented on the current threats that Jews in Germany are exposed to after the last terrorist attacks. She expressed her dismay at the insecurity of this community. Commemorative events are also being held in Hamburg and other cities to commemorate the victims and raise awareness of anti-Semitism.
The communities in Schleswig-Holstein are particularly active, where devotions and readings are planned to preserve the memory of the night of the pogrom. These events are not only a reminder, but also a call for moral courage, as the Schleswig-Flensburg church district emphasizes.
Anti-Semitism and cultural promotion
With “Aorta”, Kleve now has the chance to take a stand against anti-Semitism through a diverse and creative program. The association is not only planning commemorative events, but will also use empty shops for intercultural spaces and relies on cooperation with local museums, schools and clubs in order to offer a wide range of cultural formats. Financial support from various sources should help to implement this project.
If you would like to find out more about the activities of “Aorta”, you can find all the information and the program on the website aorta-kleve.de.
At a time when remembering the past and creating a tolerant future must go hand in hand, the commitment of “Aorta” and the diverse commemorative events shows that memory is kept alive.
