Kleve Adult Education Center: Moving to the new location from January 2024!

An important move is coming up in Kleve! The adult education center (VHS) will change location over the holidays and start in new premises at Landwehr 2-6 from January 5, 2024. The old location at Hagsche Poort 22, which was the home of the VHS for almost three decades, was closed on December 12, 2023 because the premises could no longer meet the requirements of modern adult education.

The move is a step into the future, because the new building not only offers sufficient administrative and classroom space, but is also designed to be energy efficient. An elevator ensures barrier-free access, and the location is well connected to public transport, which improves accessibility for all participants. The “Kleve Landwehr” bus stop is in the immediate vicinity, which makes it easier for visitors to get there.

The background to the move

A look into the past shows that the decision to move was based on constructive planning on the part of the city. As early as September 25, 2024, the mayor presented the printed matter on the “relocation of the Kleve adult education center” in order to inform the council members about the plans. The old location no longer met the requirements for contemporary VHS work, which is why the decision was made to use an unused municipal property at the Landwehr, which previously served as an interim community and comprehensive school.

A comprehensive upgrade of the new location is planned, which should be completed by mid-2025. This includes new layouts, drywall work as well as the replacement of doors and basic cleaning. The budget for the upgrade and the move is taken into account in the 2025 budget, although some of the legal questions surrounding the final determination of the location still need to be clarified.

The educational offerings at the adult education center

The adult education center has a long tradition in Germany and Austria and is an important public welfare institution that promotes adult education. With a wide range of courses on offer - from compact seminars to language courses to family education measures - the VHS is an integral part of the local educational landscape. It strives for equal opportunities and expanding education for all age groups from 16 years onwards. This will also be continued in the new premises at the Landwehr, where the new program will be presented online on January 5, 2024.

Overall, the move of the Kleve adult education center is a sign of change and modernization, which not only shows the support of the city and municipal administration, but also meets the needs of a diverse social educational landscape. The VHS employees will only be available to a limited extent until January 4, 2024, and the new program will be available both online and in printed form at various locations in Kleve, Emmerich and Rees.
