In Krefeld today the train chaos is perfect. A technical defect led to massive disruptions in train services, which particularly affected passengers. Darius Broekmans, a student from Düsseldorf, wanted to visit his family in Geldern on Thursday afternoon. The planned departure was at 2:40 p.m. from Düsseldorf main station with the regional express RE 10. But far from it: the train was canceled, and that was due to a malfunction in the signal box. A fire in a control box on Thursday night had shut down Krefeld's main train station since the early hours of the morning and was expected to last for 48 hours.
Broekmans made his way to the rail replacement stop, where many travelers were already waiting. The situation was chaotic: no bus had run for an hour and a half, and despite the announcement in the Deutsche Bahn app that the RE 10 was scheduled to run from 3:08 p.m., the trains were not running. There were no announcements at the station itself, and the information stand incorrectly confirmed the train's departure. This caused great discontent among travelers as the information turned out to be incorrect.
Communication problems and ambiguities
The problems weren't just limited to the trains. Broekmans had difficulty contacting the bus company responsible for the replacement service - unfortunately the buses had been canceled. While Deutsche Bahn denied responsibility for the failure of the rail replacement service, the Rhine-Ruhr Railway was also surprised by the report and clarified the situation with the bus coordinators.
The situation remained tense. On Friday, repairs to the signal box were expected to continue into the afternoon. Deutsche Bahn couldn't even guarantee the planned time of 5 p.m. for the reopening of train traffic. Travelers found themselves at Krefeld train station without additional service staff to receive information and support. The railway itself stated that the short-term failure could of course cause some difficulties at the beginning, but exposed the failure in communication.
