Theft of millions in Krefeld: Perpetrators remain silent in court!

A trial is currently being heard in Krefeld against two defendants for a spectacular theft that occurred at the Oranierring in December last year. As RP Online reports, the two men are accused of stealing a bag worth over 108,000 euros. A German defendant from Krefeld and an Iranian citizen born in Aachen are the focus of the public prosecutor's office, which assumes that at least two other accomplices were involved in the preparation of the serious theft. These comrades-in-arms have not yet been identified.

The two defendants were brought before the lay judges of the Krefeld district court from custody to begin their trial. Despite intensive investigations, they do not want to reveal any information about their alleged accomplices, which poses a challenge for the public prosecutor's office. The lack of information could significantly hinder the comprehensive investigation of the crime.

Violent crime in Krefeld

Recently there was not only this major theft in Krefeld, but also an attack that made life difficult for a 44-year-old man. As the press portal reports, on the night of May 31, 2024, he was approached at Moltkeplatz by two young men who asked for a light. When the man reacted, one of the perpetrators threatened him with a machete and demanded his valuables. After a scuffle, the victim was injured with a knife, but he didn't let it get him down. It chased the perpetrators on a bicycle and at the same time alerted the police, who arrived shortly afterwards and provided first aid.

The two suspects, brothers aged 15 and 18, were arrested as part of the manhunt. The 44-year-old from Krefeld was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The public prosecutor's office requested that the brothers be brought before a judge, which underlines the serious dimension of the incident.

The crime situation in Germany

The incidents in Krefeld can be placed in the larger context of crime statistics in Germany. In 2022, around 5.63 million crimes were recorded by the police nationwide, including 1.78 million thefts, which represents a real increase compared to the previous year. In North Rhine-Westphalia, there is a particular focus on residential burglaries, which accounted for over 23,500 - a third of all cases in Germany. The clearance rate for residential burglary crimes in 2022 was unfortunately rather low at 16.1%.

Theft and robbery not only concern the judiciary, but also society. For 2022, statistics recorded over 38,000 robbery crimes, including handbag snatches and robberies of gas stations and financial institutions. The perpetrators are often clever, so the clearance rate in these areas of almost 60% is better than for some other crimes, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Amid these crime-fighting challenges, it is even more important to strengthen the community and remain vigilant. Krefeld is an example of the efforts of the authorities and civil society to combat the increasing number of crimes.
