Strike chaos in Lippe: two tunnels closed for 24 hours!
In the coming days, drivers and commuters in North Rhine-Westphalia will have to prepare for significant traffic restrictions. The reason for this is a 24-hour strike called by the Verdi union. From Tuesday, January 20th, at 4 p.m., several tunnels will be closed, including the Emmerauentunnel in Lügde and the Menkhauser Berg tunnel in Oerlinghausen. These closures will end on Wednesday, January 21st at 4pm, as LZ reports.
In total, the strike affects 14 of 28 state tunnels in North Rhine-Westphalia. The union emphasizes that this measure is part of a nationwide strike day in road construction. In addition to Lügde and Oerlinghausen, the Weserauentunnel between Porta and Minden is also affected by the closures. Traffic disruptions are expected, particularly on Tuesday afternoons, as many commuters want to use the roads.
Ruhr24 informed that work in tunnel control centers is also affected, which could further impact traffic flow.

Important note for commuters: Additional rallies will take place in several cities, which could further burden traffic. Protest actions are planned in Cologne, Gelsenkirchen and Hamm. Drivers are asked to keep themselves informed about the traffic situation and, if necessary, take alternative routes.
Warning strikes in local transport
Warning strikes in local transport have also been announced for the same period, in which employees of more than 30 companies in North Rhine-Westphalia, including the Cologne transport company, will stop working. ZDF reports that the strikes are taking place due to a lack of offers from employers, which is leading to restrictions in bus and train transport.
The Verdi union is demanding, among other things, 8% more wages or at least 350 euros per month as well as higher bonuses in stressful jobs and additional days off. Employers did not make a concrete offer in two rounds. Further warning strikes cannot be ruled out in order to increase the pressure on the negotiating partners.
It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the next few days and what measures will be taken to minimize the impact on traffic.
