Red alert: Police warn of fraudulent shock calls in the district!
Recently there have been increasing reports of fraudulent shock calls in the Märkischer Kreis. Older people in particular are the most common target groups for these scams. To counteract this, the police have now launched a comprehensive prevention campaign. As lokalkompass.de reports, the police have tested effective protective measures against these insidious frauds in the past.
Scammers usually call under the pretense of being police officers or family members. A typical example of such a call is when the caller claims to be from the Iserlohn criminal police and talks about arrested burglars. The goal is clear: to extort money or valuables. Emergence is feigned by using phrases like “Mom, Mom, I don’t want to go to jail.” Often an alleged prosecutor takes over the conversation and demands a high deposit from the victims.
Nationwide CESA prevention campaign
The police in the Märkischer Kreis are alerted and record new reports of these incidents almost every day. Against this background, the nationwide CESA campaign (call center fraud, grandchild trick, shock call) is starting. As part of this, police officers will be present at weekly markets to educate the population about the dangers and present preventative measures. The next consultation appointments, which are free for anyone interested, will take place on the following days:
- Plettenberg, Wochenmarkt: Freitag, 14. November, 8 bis 13 Uhr.
- Iserlohn, Wochenmarkt: Mittwoch, 19. November, 8 bis 13 Uhr.
- Halver, Wochenmarkt: Freitag, 21. November, 9 bis 13 Uhr.
The message from the police is clear: If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and never give out personal information or assets. These simple but effective tips are intended to protect as many citizens as possible from the traps of fraudsters.
Protective measures and tips
The police's prevention work is already having an impact and we are calling for everyone to be careful together. It is particularly important to protect older people, who may have less technical know-how. Understanding and educating yourself about the possibilities of such scams increases your chances of not becoming a victim.
In addition to active reconnaissance, the police also offer exercises and training to increase sensitivity to such calls. It is therefore important that the information is also passed on within your own four walls. Neighbors and relatives can also be warned and informed.
With our eyes open and a healthy level of suspicion, we can all help minimize such scams and ensure that fraudsters' thirty-year-old tricks no longer work. Let's have a good hand together and support the prevention campaigns!
