UWG elects Steffen Wieland: New course for the Märkischer Kreis!

A fresh wind is blowing through the district council faction of the Independent Voters' Community (UWG) in the Märkisches Kreis. On November 3, 2025, Steffen Wieland, 30 years old and living in Kierspe, was elected as the new parliamentary group leader. He takes over at a time when political challenges in the region are numerous.

The newly elected parliamentary group has set itself the goal of shaping local issues in a citizen-oriented and independent manner. With five district council members and numerous committed citizens from local voting communities, the UWG is well positioned. Petra Triches from Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde will serve as deputy group leader alongside Steffen Wieland.

Focus on important topics

The priorities of the fresh team are clearly defined: demand-oriented public transport, health care close to home, modern schools, a modern digital infrastructure and improved economic development are on the agenda. Particular attention is paid to the financial situation of the district's cities and municipalities. The Märkischer Kreis operates a pay-as-you-go budget, which means that most of the costs have to be borne by the municipalities and citizens.

Steffen Wieland describes the UWG as the financial conscience of the district council. This assumption of responsibility is more important than ever, especially at a time when careful financial management and a solid financial basis are essential. “We must treat new projects sensitively and always act in the interests of the citizens,” says Wieland.

The challenges of the future

The political landscape is constantly changing and the UWG is aware of this. The new board plans to shape fact-oriented, independent and responsible policies in the coming legislative period. With a clear focus on transparency in the district council's decision-making processes, the UWG wants to regain and strengthen the trust of citizens.

At a time when people's concerns are often challenged by complex issues such as digital infrastructure and financial issues, the UWG is ready to lead this challenging discourse. While some are concerned with exchanges and questions about browser settings and online security, as Guiding Tech explains, the UWG is dedicated to relevant municipal issues at the political debate table.

However, UWG can be counted on to drive real change – a good knack for financial strategy could be the key to success.

We will be curious to see how the UWG implements its plans and whether it manages to overcome the challenges presented by the district council. It remains to be seen whether their approaches will actually bear fruit and have a lasting impact on politics in the Märkisches Kreis.
