Mass brawl in Heiligenhaus: Two large families in a bloodlust!
Yesterday evening there was a violent confrontation between two large families in Heiligenhaus, North Rhine-Westphalia, which began in a previous dispute. Around 100 people, mainly members of two large German-Lebanese families, were involved in the fight, in which weapons such as machetes and several knives were also used. The situation escalated while a woman was moving out of the shared apartment, which resulted in brutal fistfights and violent arguments in which five people were injured, reports tagesschau.de.
The injury of a 38-year-old man who was taken to hospital and had to be operated on after being stabbed was particularly dramatic. His life is in danger. Four other people were also registered on site with stab wounds who required inpatient treatment. The Wuppertal public prosecutor's office has set up a murder squad to comprehensively investigate the incident, as the situation was initially confusing. The police arrested two men, aged 27 and 51, for grievous bodily harm. The 27-year-old is a relative of the injured woman, while the 51-year-old is the father of the 20-year-old man at issue in the family dispute, as welt.de reports.
The background to the dispute
The reason for the heated atmosphere was a separation dispute between a young couple, whose conflict had started in an apartment in the local residential area. The family members gathered here while the woman wanted to clear furniture from the apartment with the support of her relatives. The trigger for the dispute was the desired divorce, which became increasingly heated. The first police operation took place at the couple's address in the afternoon, but the situation continued to escalate as the clashes reached their peak at around 7.30pm.
Emergency forces from Cologne, Düsseldorf, Wuppertal, Bochum and the Mettmann district were mobilized to provide support. A helicopter was also used to gain an overview of the situation and control the clashes. The residential area was cordoned off to bring the situation under control and to treat the injured people. In the further course, the security of the surrounding hospitals in Velbert and Wuppertal was ensured by police patrols. Interestingly, there were no crimes committed by members of the family groups who gathered in front of the hospital, which represents at least a small ray of hope in the tense situation.
The social background
The issue of migration often plays a role in the discussion about such violent conflicts. According to an analysis by bpb.de, it can be observed that a small proportion of migrants become criminals, but overall they are noticed more often than people without a migration background. Violent crimes, such as those seen in Heiligenhaus, can be influenced by social isolation, errors in integration and also previous experiences of violence. Particularly in shared accommodation, the potential for conflict often arises, leading to such escalations.
Although statistically there has been a decline in crime among migrants, prejudices remain. Initiatives for better integration are necessary to minimize the risk of conflicts like the one in Heiligenhaus and to promote harmonious coexistence.
