Volunteering in Mettmann: Choir MElodie inspires over 500 helpers!

Last weekend, the Mettmann choir “MElodie” transformed the Kaplan-Flintrop-Haus into a festival of music and gratitude. This afternoon, under the motto “Volunteering opens doors,” over 500 volunteers from across the district were honored. These committed people do valuable work in daycare centers, tutoring centers, meeting places, retirement homes and for refugees. Volunteer coordinator Britta Franke emphasized the unifying power of music and left no doubt about how important such events are for the community.

The choir's performance, led by Otmar Stangl, was a real highlight. The singers thrilled the audience with soulful performances of timeless classics such as “Imagine”, “You’ve got a Friend”, “The Sound of Silence” and “Thank you for the Music”. The applause was so overwhelming that the actors were rewarded with a standing ovation. After the concert, a coffee with Bergisch specialties invited people to have personal conversations and end the afternoon comfortably.

Use for the Mettmann board

However, the committed work of the “MElodie” choir goes beyond this festive afternoon. There was another significant event in October 2024: under the motto “Family & Friends” they held a concert at which donations were collected for the Mettmann Tafel. Instead of paying an entry fee, visitors were encouraged to donate money. A total of 500 euros were raised, which Silke Blenck and Tom Weingartner handed over to Simon Wilde from the Tafel. Wilde emphasized the importance of the food bank as a point of contact for people in need, which made the need for such initiatives even clearer.

The choir, which is now two years old, has already compiled an impressive repertoire. The musical spectrum, most of which was arranged by choir director Otmar Stangl, ranges from world hits by Billy Joel to classics by Abba and Simon & Garfunkel. The choir is looking for more members, especially men who are interested in singing. Those interested can contact: mail@chor-melodie.de report.

Outlook on upcoming events

The anticipation for the next “MElodie” concert is already great. Under the motto “In the Mood with MElodie” another musical highlight will take place on January 31, 2026 in the auditorium of the Konrad-Heresbach-Gymnasium. If you would like to find out more about the choir and its activities, you can find further information on the website www.melodiemettmann.de.

In summary, it can be said that the event and the further work of the “MElodie” choir symbolize the commitment and solidarity in the Mettmann community. Music connects, delights and opens doors; and that was noticeable this afternoon in a festive atmosphere.
