Series of burglaries in the Mettmann district: Police are asking for information!
In the Mettmann district, the police department is currently in great demand. In the last few days there have been increasing reports of break-ins in various places, including Langenfeld, Hilden and Ratingen. So reported Express of several incidents that have affected both private and commercial establishments.
In Langenfeld, for example, there were several attempted break-ins on June 19, 2025. At 3:40 a.m. an attempt was made to break into a perfumery. The perpetrators destroyed the glass entrance door, but triggered the alarm and had to flee without loot. However, during the day between 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., unknown persons successfully broke into an attic apartment on Baumberger Strasse. The damage here is still unclear. In another incident on the same day, burglars broke into a nursing home on Richrather Strasse at night and also left chaos there by prying open coffee machines and cupboards.
Burglaries in shops and homes
Things were also very high in Hilden: In a discount store on Lehmkuhler Weg, the damage to a damaged window amounted to around 300 euros, while the stolen tobacco products were only worth 50 euros. The break-in at a cell phone store on Mittelstrasse on June 20th was particularly bold, where the perpetrators stole cash in the mid-three-digit range and fled on an e-scooter. There was also a break-in at the business premises of a heating installer in Ratingen, where tools, pipes and electrical equipment were stolen.
The police are now asking the public to help with the investigation. Information can be given directly to the respective police stations: Langenfeld on 02173 288-6310, Hilden on 02103 898-6410 and Ratingen on 02102 9981-6210. If you suspect a recent crime, you should dial 110 immediately.
Burglary protection and prevention
The current incidents also highlight the general number of burglaries in the district. According to police crime statistics, over 40 percent of burglaries end up being attempted. The North Rhine-Westphalia police appeal to citizens to review and improve their security precautions. Poorly secured doors and windows are often popular points of attack for burglars mettan-polizei.nrw emphasized. Simple mechanical and electronic security products can make a big difference here.
The initiative "Bars in place! Safer is safer", which was launched by the North Rhine-Westphalia police in 2011, aims to raise public awareness of the issue of burglary protection. Mechanical security on windows and doors as well as tested burglary-resistant house and apartment doors are the best investment in security. Particularly effective protection is to deter potential burglars and prevent uninvited visitors.
Burglary protection should target the weak points of the house. Windows should be equipped with tested burglary-resistant window fittings, while good external lighting and motion detectors also help to minimize the risk of a break-in. If you check your security precautions, you can help protect your own apartment or house from theft, as well as the GDV describes.
