New senior newspaper The TOR brings tips and nostalgia to Mettmann!

On July 1, 2025, the senior citizens' council of the city of Mettmann published the second 2025 edition of the free seniors' newspaper "Das TOR". The diverse topics not only shed light on the interests of older people, but also promote their commitment and participation in social life. This edition is available in the city library, in Mettmann parishes and in the AWO day care center and can be accessed via the city's homepage www.mettmann.de/seniorenrat can be accessed digitally.

Readers can look forward to an exciting report on senior citizen advice in Mettmann, which provides helpful information. A nostalgic look back at holiday trips from the 1960s is also offered, which appealingly takes up the life stories of many older people. Tips for riding a Pedelec and a humorous list of farm rules round off the offer. A particularly practical feature of the new edition is the list of all upcoming senior council appointments for the second half of the year.

New offer for seniors

An important part of the new edition is the introduction of the senior information point, which will offer consultation hours for seniors in the city library from July 2025. This creates a new, informal place where questions can be answered and concerns can be addressed. All in all, the newspaper shows a good knack for relevant topics that enrich the everyday lives of seniors.

Together with the senior newspaper, the SIM study 2024, published on May 23, 2025, provides new insights into digital participation in old age. The study shows that internet usage among people aged 60 and over has increased to an impressive 87% - an increase of 6 percentage points compared to 2021. What is particularly noteworthy is that usage among people over 80 has increased to 62%, underlining the growing importance of digital media in this age group.

Digital developments and challenges

According to SIM study results, smartphone ownership among those over 80 has increased by 18 percentage points, further driving digital inclusion among this age group. However, there are also challenges: 66% of people over 60 have limited digital health skills. The need for tailor-made offers to promote digital skills is particularly high here. Super tip also emphasizes that measures such as the citizen portal and barrier-free access to public transport are important steps in the right direction.

Cities are adapting more and more to the needs of the older generation. While the Seniors' Council ensures a lively exchange with both the newspaper and new formats, the SIM study emphasizes the need for media literacy and digital participation in order to increase the quality of life of all seniors.
