Accident escapes shake Monheim and Langenfeld – police are looking for witnesses!

Recently, the police authorities in Langenfeld and Monheim am Rhein have been confronted with a number of hit and run accidents, which are both annoying and costly for the affected vehicle owners. On Thursday, September 18th, a vehicle was damaged in two places in Monheim, but the person who caused it ran away without taking care of the damage. The first escape occurred on Tegeler Straße, where an unknown car damaged the right wheel arch of an Opel Vivaro. The material damage is estimated at around 500 euros. The second accident occurred on Wilhelm-Leuschner-Straße, where a Ford C-Max that was parked in a parking bay was affected. The damage here amounts to around 900 euros and affects both the front and the left wheel arch.

The police in Monheim have set up a telephone number for anyone who has information about these incidents: 02173 9594-6350. There is also a call for help for another traffic accident escape on Saturday, September 20th in Langenfeld. This happened on Seidenweberstrasse, where an unknown driver damaged the garden fence of a property at number 13. This resulted in medium three-digit material damage. The police in Langenfeld take the number 02173 288-6310 information.

Accident research and prevention

Hit and run are not only a problem locally, but also shed light on larger trends in road traffic. The ADAC has been analyzing serious traffic accidents in Germany since 2005 in order to understand the causes and make recommendations for accident prevention. A significant proportion of accidents, around 20%, affect motorcyclists, who are particularly at risk - a fact that points to the high accident rate in solo accidents or collisions with cars. In addition, studies show that distraction and loss of control are among the most common causes of accidents, especially on country roads, where the danger for cyclists and pedestrians also increases.

Another important topic is the influence of weather conditions on the frequency of accidents. The number of accidents is significantly higher on slippery roads. That's why implementing in-cabin sensing systems that detect distracted drivers could be a step in the right direction to prevent accidents. Safety measures such as mandatory seat belts, which have been in place since 1984, have already helped reduce the number of road deaths by an impressive 75%. The introduction of turning assistants for trucks, which will become a legal requirement from 2024, could further increase safety on our roads.

Social responsibility

Traffic accidents not only affect those directly involved, but also have far-reaching social effects. The statistics on traffic accidents shows that a large number of accidents can be attributed to driving errors or carelessness. It is therefore time for us all to become aware of our responsibility on the road. Educational work and prevention measures are essential in order to reduce the ever-increasing numbers.

This topic is very relevant in our region, not least because of the many daily commuters and the often complex traffic situations. Everyone can contribute, whether through defensive driving or reporting hit and run accidents. Only together can we improve safety on our roads.
