Current traffic accident statistics
Unfortunately, accidents like this are not isolated cases. The road traffic accident statistics as published by Destatis provides evidence that around 2.5 million road traffic accidents are registered nationwide every year. Although the number of traffic accidents has increased in recent decades, the number of accidents resulting in personal injury remains largely at the 1955 level.
A total of 2,839 people died on roads in Germany in 2023, a decrease compared to previous decades, but the number remains worryingly high. The current EU average is 46 road deaths per million inhabitants; in Germany there are 34. This shows that, despite all efforts to improve road safety, there is still a lot to do.
Causes and prevention
The most common causes of traffic accidents with personal injuries are insufficient distance, inadequate speed and driving under the influence of alcohol. In 2023, there were approximately 15,700 alcohol-related accidents with injuries, strongly indicating that education and prevention are very important. These statistics create a basis for future measures in legislation, traffic education and infrastructure, which must be pursued further by those responsible.
The goal of transport policy, “Vision Zero”, remains more urgent than ever: no more traffic deaths by 2050. It is high time for all road users to do their part to ensure safety on the roads.
In summary, the Espelkamp accident shows how quickly tragic events can occur in road traffic. It remains to be hoped that such incidents will lead to a rethinking of road safety and that everyone will take responsibility for themselves and others.
