Münster creates new living space: two refugee accommodations planned!

The city of Münster has big plans: On Wednesday, the city council decided to build two new refugee accommodations. These will be built in Albachten-Ost and on Hobbeltstrasse in Handorf. With the aim of overcoming the challenges in the area of refugee accommodation, each accommodation should offer space for up to 50 people nachrichten-heute.net reported.

The plans stipulate that these accommodations are not just temporary solutions. In the long term, the buildings will also be used as regular apartments. Construction work in Handorf will begin in December 2025 and completion is scheduled for the third quarter of 2027. Construction in Albachten will start much later, in July 2026, and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2028. This is an important step towards the gradual abandonment of the rented interim solutions currently in use.

Current accommodation situation

Münster currently offers over 2,400 places in 40 different refugee facilities. But the majority of these places, more than 60 percent, are only available for a limited period of time. These new facilities are intended to significantly improve the accommodation situation and promote the integration of refugees into urban society. The decision for the locations is also based on an even distribution across the entire city.

The municipal refugee accommodations are designed as transitional facilities. The aim is for refugees to move into the private housing market when a residence permit is issued at the latest. However, finding accommodation in private housing is often a challenge, especially in a tight housing market like in Münster. The city of Münster therefore offers intensive support and support in order to optimally prepare future tenants for independent living.

Promote integration

The city also ensures that refugees continue to receive support after they move into private apartments. Specialists are available up to three months after the move and maintain close contact with the refugees, landlords and volunteer housing sponsors. This close collaboration has already led to more than 1,600 people being successfully placed in the private housing market in 2016 and 2017.

The high motivation of refugees, the commitment of volunteers and the willingness of landlords are crucial factors that contribute to improving the housing situation. So it is clear: In Münster, active work is being done to improve the general conditions for refugees.

With the new accommodation and ongoing support, Münster would like to set the course for successful integration and offer the refugees a perspective. The Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth highlights the importance of maintaining minimum standards for the protection of refugees in order to create a safe and protective environment in refugee accommodation.

There is great anticipation about the new accommodation in Münster, because they are a step in the right direction to give refugees a future worth living.
