Wagenknecht is missing: BSW leadership in crisis – new decisions are pending!

In the political microcosm of the BSW (Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht) the signs point to change. Co-party leader Amira Mohamed Ali has announced that crucial discussions regarding the role of Sahra Wagenknecht and the upcoming name change of the party will take place in the coming days. What surprised many, however, was that Wagenknecht herself was unable to attend the press conference due to a relapse of illness, even though she was originally scheduled to take part.

Members are curious to see whether Wagenknecht will run for party leadership at the upcoming party conference in Magdeburg or whether she will withdraw from the race. However, her spokeswoman provides some optimism by assuring that the former top politician will remain active in a leading position at the BSW.

Name change and internal party discussions

Another hot topic that was discussed at the closed meeting is the planned name change. The BSW would like to keep its abbreviation, but it should no longer stand for “Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht”. Over 3,000 suggestions have already been received and 30 of them have made it to the shortlist. The task on the table is to develop a concrete proposal on Tuesday, which will then be presented to the party conference. A two-thirds majority is required for the final name change.

The discussions about the new name are running parallel to the preparations for the party conference. In addition, a key proposal that summarizes the BSW's key positions is being sought. This says, among other things, that the so-called firewall against the AfD only strengthens it further. A clearly stated goal of the BSW is to be represented in all East German state parliaments in the 2026 state elections, without getting involved in coalitions that simply aim to keep the AfD out of government.

Further events and dates

There are also numerous events on the agenda in the short term, which can be accessed via the party's website be displayed. These include important events on November 4th, November 6th and November 13th, 2025, as well as a special event on December 2nd, 2025. A highlight is the Annual Law Update on December 3rd, 2025 in Roseville, California, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Participation in these events is generally recommended, as some even allow online registration and ticket purchase.

Finally, it should be noted that there is currently a lot of movement at BSW. While the leadership deals with key questions, it remains to be seen how Sahra Wagenknecht's role and the future direction of the party will develop.
