22 new medical assistants celebrate their graduation in Gummersbach!

On July 14, 2025, a special occasion was celebrated at the Oberberg commercial vocational college in Gummersbach: 22 newly qualified medical assistants (MFA) received their diplomas and MFA letters. This ceremony, which was intended to honor the successful graduates, represented an important milestone in the three-year dual training. Michael Steiger, head of the medical assistant training program, proudly handed over the vocational school certificates, while Dr. Stefan Lichtinghagen, chairman and training officer of the North Rhine Medical Association, presented the MFA letter and warmly congratulated the graduates on their success.

The dual training, which consists of practical training in practice as well as part-time teaching at a vocational college, forms the basis for the activities that the new healthcare professionals expect. In accordance with the requirements of the Vocational Training Act (BBiG), the training content and examination requirements were clearly structured. “The judgment is in your hands,” says Lichtinghagen, “your future employers will benefit from your skills.”

The importance of dual training

The three-year MFA training is not only one of the most important qualifications in healthcare, but is also very popular. The path there clearly shows how closely theory and practice are linked. For example, graduates must acquire practical skills that are required in real work situations. In addition to successfully completing the training, taking part in the intermediate examination and properly documenting proof of training are also crucial. These specifications are recorded in aekno.de.

In addition, the training contracts, which serve as a legal basis, must contain essential content regarding the rights and obligations of those involved. From February 2024, these contracts can only be entered digitally via the “MFA portal”, which makes administration much easier for prospective trainers. In addition to the formal aspects, the legal framework, such as the Youth Employment Protection Act and the regulations on vacation entitlements, must also be taken into account.

Training standards at the federal level

The training regulations for medical assistants, which were developed under the leadership of the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BiBB), are a central component of training at vocational schools. A comprehensive framework curriculum was created together with experts from the employee and employer sides. This plan was confirmed by the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs and ensures that training is designed uniformly across the country. Information about this can be found on the website of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education in Germany. Future MFAs must therefore familiarize themselves not only with the practical requirements, but also with the nationwide standards that guide their training, as can be found on vmf-online.de.

The ceremonial farewell to the 22 graduates is not only a reason for joy for the young specialists, but also a signal for the health sector in the region. These new medical assistants bring a breath of fresh air and new commitment to the practices. We can only hope that they will find a good hand for the challenges that lie ahead of them - we say congratulations and good luck on their future journey!
