Successful Taekwondo fighters from Becketal win eight medals!
An exciting weekend for the TV Becketal Taekwondo department! At this year's LA Open in Velbert, the athletes shone with impressive performances and won a total of eight medals. The team, consisting of 11 competitors, won one silver and seven bronze! The athletes, under the guidance of their coaches Grandmaster Bajrush Saliu, Patrick Klein, Muhamet Kameraj and Lilia Heutzenröder, cheered each other on loudly and started with great team spirit.
The event, which took place with a total of 387 registered fighters, was a real highlight in the Taekwondo calendar. Lukas Bese secured the silver medal, while the bronze trophies went to Elisa Schneider, Lias Klein, Sophie Nitschke, Lorena Hendrich, Valerie Heutzenröder, Marcel Heutzenröder and Leonie Bese. These successes show that the Taekwondo community in Germany continues to grow and flourish.
Taekwondo: A worldwide trend
Taekwondo is very popular not only in Germany but also internationally. The martial art, which originated in Korea, is now practiced in over 200 nations and has an ever-growing following. Statistics from the German Taekwondo Union (DTU) say that around 60,551 members were registered in 2021. This number has increased continuously in recent years, which shows that martial arts is attracting real attention in this country. Taekwondo has also been an official Olympic discipline since 2000, which further increases the sport's appeal. Germany recently won a bronze medal in taekwondo at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
The DTU, founded in 1981, is also the only taekwondo association in Germany recognized by the German Olympic Sports Confederation. Long before the Olympic Games, there were numerous competitions in Germany, with the first German championship taking place in Munich in 1968. A sign that Taekwondo is deeply anchored in German sports culture - a trend that is certainly also being promoted by the increasing internationalism of the sport.
Sport in Mauritius and the Growth of Taekwondo
Parallel to the development in Germany, Mauritius is also experiencing a growing boom in sports. In addition to beautiful hiking trails in the mountains and countless sports activities ranging from yoga to horseback riding to martial arts, Taekwondo is finding more and more fans. Mauritius is not only known for its beaches, but also offers numerous opportunities for sporting activities - ideal for the active population and tourists alike. This shows how diverse and inclusive the sport is, regardless of geography.
The trend towards martial arts such as taekwondo, mixed martial arts and judo is also growing here, which symbolizes the diversity of the sport. Fitness clubs, which are increasingly opening in Mauritius, are helping to spread the word and offering anyone interested the opportunity to do physical activity and get involved in martial arts. The cooperation with the German Taekwondo Union could be of great benefit to this development in order to promote local talent and strengthen international cooperation.
The successes of the Taekwondo athletes from TV Becketal in Velbert are a clear sign that the work of the trainers and the dedication of the athletes are not in vain. With a strong team spirit and a clear focus on the future, it remains to be seen what successes the department will achieve in the coming years. A big compliment to everyone involved!
