A violent fire caused a stir on Tuesday evening in Wiehl, more precisely in Forst. Shortly before 10 p.m., passers-by noticed massive smoke that was even visible from the highway. The alerted fire department had to act quickly because flames were already coming from the roof area of a burnt-out shed, under which several vehicles were parked. Sebastian Schmidt took over the management of operations.
In order to protect an adjacent residential building, the fire department set up a barrier. In addition, an external attack was launched from two sides, using techniques such as the “window impulse” to contain the fire and prevent flames from spreading. Fortunately, there were no injuries because the affected residential building was empty - the residents were on vacation. However, the fire department was able to successfully rescue a mobile home that was parked under the coach house. The exact circumstances and cause of the fire are currently unclear, as reported by oberberg-aktuell.de.
Variable fire danger in the region
The region has been confronted with further fire incidents in recent times. On October 4, 2024, there was a major fire at night in Wiehl-Drabenderhöhe, in which around 500 of a total of 800 silo bales were in flames. The fire brigade had great difficulty fighting the flames. Flanked by support staff from the Technical Relief Agency and local farmers, the extinguishing work continued until midday. Here, too, the emergency services were challenged because the structure of the silo bales made effective combat difficult. Residents were asked via the Nina warning app to keep windows and doors closed to protect themselves from the heavy smoke. The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing, as feuerwehrmagazin.de reports.
